Work Experience

Work Experience offers young people the opportunity to spend a short period of time, usually 2 weeks, in a real workplace. Pupils complete a range of work-related tasks and learn key skills and knowledge.

Through this hands-on approach, our young people develop the attitude they need to succeed throughout their working lives while being introduced to the roles and structures of the modern workplace.

Virtually all students in Tower Hamlets have the opportunity to undertake a one- or two-week work experience placement whilst in Year 10 (age 14-15 years old) or Year 11 (age 15-16 years old). Some also have the opportunity to carry out a second placement whilst studying at 6th Form (age 16-18 years old).

Every year, we arrange approximately 3,000 placements for young people in Tower Hamlets.

How it works

On a placement, the employer should provide meaningful work for the student and provide an overview of different aspects of the organisation. The placements usually last for two weeks and can be held any time during the year. The students will be aged between 14-18, studying for GCSEs at Secondary School or GNVQ Vocational Courses at Sixth Form/College.

On the placement, the students should behave and be treated as if they were in a real job. They normally work the same hours and accept the same discipline as others in the workplace.

Employers are expected to offer the opportunity to do real work in a safe working environment and provide the appropriate level of supervision, without acting as teachers or ‘in loco parentis’.

If you are interested in offering a placement, we will supply you with an Employers Handbook and provide as much advice and support as required. A representative from Tower Hamlets EBP will visit your workplace prior to the placement and give a comprehensive briefing on issues such as Health and Safety and Employer Liability Insurance. You will also have the opportunity to interview the selected student prior to the start of the placement.

Company coordinators/staff do not need to undergo a Disclosure & Barring Service check to host a student and no prior training is required.

How to volunteer

The work experience team are always looking for new employers and opportunities to offer work experience to the young people of Tower Hamlets.  Our students are interested in all industries and we welcome employers from small, medium, large and global organisations. Whether your sector is Construction, Hairdressing, Corporate Banking or Local Farming, we would love to hear from you.

We have over 20 years experience working with young people and schools and will be there to support you throughout your journey. See the Work Experience Calendar for the dates students are going out on work experience. Simply select the date/s that are convenient for you and let us know how many students you can host.
