Developed as an extension of our successful Reading Partners scheme, Writing Partners has been developed to further improve the literacy skills and engage the imagination of primary school pupils.
Volunteers work with students over eight weeks to produce a piece of extended writing, helping them to think about structure and planning, setting the scene, creating characters, and proof reading work.
They will also have the chance to develop their communication and social skills through interaction with an adult, which can signifcantly boost confidence.
How it works
An eight week programme, volunteers from the business community visit a school for 30 minutes every week to work through activities with a student in Years 2 – 6 (aged 6 – 11), culminating in a piece of written work. Writing Partners can be run as a one term programme for existing Reading Partners or as a stand-alone scheme.
We have developed a selection of Writing Booklets, each with a different theme and genre.
How to volunteer
We welcome only teams of volunteers (a minimum of 6 people) from companies.
Volunteers will need to commit to the full eight week programme. Training is provided.
A Disclosure & Barring Service check is required. Tower Hamlets EBP will provide the company co-ordinator with the DBS forms. All volunteers must submit their form to us before beginning the scheme. There is no cost involved.
