The Primary Language Partners scheme aims to support students’ learning of basic phrases and vocabulary in modern languages.
How it works
Business volunteers spend 30 minutes each week with Primary School students helping them learn basic phrases and vocabulary in a modern foreign language, usually French or Spanish. The sessions are also spent developing an understanding of the different culture e.g. food, traditions, landmarks.
Volunteers should commit to one full term (approximately 10 weeks) in the first instance, but most volunteers choose to stay at the school for the whole academic year, if not longer! The students are chosen from across the Years 4 to 6 aged between 7 and 11 years old.
Materials for the sessions are available at the school or alternatively volunteers bring in their own exercises to work through with the pupils. Various resources are also available under the ‘Resources’ section on this website.
All volunteers are required to complete a Police Check Form before they start at the School. This is available from Tower Hamlets EBP.
How to volunteer
We welcome only teams of volunteers (a minimum of 6 people) from companies.
Volunteers will need to commit to one full term (approximately 10 weeks), but find that most volunteers choose to stay for the whole academic year. Training is provided.
A Disclosure & Barring Service check is required. Tower Hamlets EBP will provide the company co-ordinator with the DBS forms. All volunteers must submit their form to us before beginning the scheme. There is no cost involved.
