Supported by J.P. Morgan, Pathways to Success is a programme of workshops for Post 16 students in Tower Hamlet Sixth Form Colleges and institutions. Volunteers work with young people helping them to prepare for life after Sixth Form College.
There are three basic ‘pathways’ a young person can take once they leave Sixth Form College; they can study at university or a similar further education institution, they can take an apprenticeship or go straight into the job market.
Pathways to Success is designed to provide 16 to 18 year old students with information, advice and skill development to make a success of whichever ‘pathway’ they decide to take. Pathways to Success events are delivered by an experienced Project Manager from Tower Hamlets EBP and are supported by volunteers from the business community.
How it works
We offer our Sixth Form Colleges a range of workshops and activities, including:
- Communication and Presentation Master Class
- Future Finance (financial issues that will effect
- Interview Preparation and Practice
- Research Skills Workshop
- UCAS Personal Statement Master Class
- CV and Application Form Master Class
- Making the Most of… Your Apprenticeship
- Making the Most of… University
- Making the Most of… Your 1st Job
A Pathways to Success event will consist of one, two or three of the above activities and will last anything from 2 hours to a full day. In each event students work in small teams with volunteers. The volunteer’s role is to guide, support and motivate their team as they work through the event’s activities. There are usually between 20 to 60 students at an event.
Students get to build a relationship with the volunteers through the activities and find out more about the volunteer’s own work/life experiences.
Volunteers are briefed thoroughly on the morning of an event, are given guidelines and materials to use in each session and are fully supported by the THEBP Chair throughout.
Volunteers need to bring nothing and to dress as they would for the office. Refreshments will be provided. A variety of venues in Tower Hamlets are used.
For a full list of Pathways to Success events please see the events page or download the Pathways to Success Calendar.
How to volunteer
We welcome teams of volunteers as well as individuals from companies. Companies can either send volunteers along on an ad hoc basis or they can choose a particular event to focus their volunteers on. It’s whatever suits the company.
No prior training is required. As this is a one-off activity volunteers do not need to undergo a Disclosure & Barring Service check. There is no cost involved.
