Business Mentoring

Could you inspire, support and guide a student to make key decisions about their future career and help them develop crucial employability skills?

Through this scheme, a business volunteer meets with a small group of 1 – 3 pupils in Years 10-13 (aged 14-18) at least once a month.

You will work together on a series of useful topics such as interview technique, CV writing and presentation skills.

Business Mentors are professional people at all stages of their career; from recent graduates to CEOs, all volunteers have valuable experience and professional skills to share with young people considering further education or making their first steps into the world of work.

How it works

The mentoring scheme is designed to be as flexible as possible. Together with your mentee(s), you decide when and where to meet within the following guidelines:

  • You meet up once or twice a month for 1 hour.
  • Meetings are held either at your business or your mentee’s school.
  • We ask for a minimum commitment of 10 months (minimum of 10 sessions) to the scheme.
  • Most schemes start in the Autumn Term and run until the following summer.

Schools recommend the mentees, who attend voluntarily, on the basis of one or more of the following criteria: Future aspirations, specific career options, motivation and self esteem.

Preparation

Before being matched with your mentee(s), you will receive training and guidance to prepare you to take part.

You will be given a Business Mentor Handbook which contains session plans and activities to help you structure your meetings. Students are also briefed by the school and given a Student Notebook. You will then be invited to attend a matching and launch event at the school with your colleagues.

All mentors will also have to complete an online child protection check via the Disclosure & Barring Service. Full guidance will be provided.
