Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership (THEBP) has partnered with London City Airport and the Royal Borough of Greenwich to deliver its award-winning business education programmes to secondary schools in the borough. Having served Tower Hamlets schools for 25 years, Runway to Success sees the independent charity branching out to bring its expertise to new boroughs, giving young people in Royal Greenwich the best possible start to their future beyond school. Starting in February 2017, a range of THEBP’s one-day conferences and workshops will be delivered with support from volunteers from local businesses in 5 secondary schools across the borough, benefitting around 600 students. The first event at The John Roan School in Greenwich took place on Thursday 23rd February, with others planned at Woolwich Polytechnic School, Plumstead Manor School, Thomas Tallis School, and Corelli College throughout the coming months.
The programmes are designed to increase students’ confidence, knowledge and skills with a view to encouraging them to continue their education or secure meaningful and sustainable employment.
- Getting Ahead – a one day conference event for 13-15 year olds introducing them to the world of work through a series of activities that develop employability skills such as team work, presentation and project management. Students are supported by business volunteers, coaching the students throughout the day.
- Enterprise and Financial Literacy – Bespoke workshop(s) for all ages covering: curriculum related finance education; the development of entrepreneurial skills; through to how to manage your money at university.
- Head to Head – a one day event for 14-19 year old students where students participate in first interviews with a business volunteer. Students then receive constructive feedback and interview coaching.
Anthony Angol, Senior CSR Executive at London City Airport said: “Runway to Success offers Greenwich secondary pupils an opportunity to consider their next steps at a formative chapter of the lives, with practical advice from local business volunteers. We hope that these events will raise aspirations and help prepare pupils for the next stage of their education, or enhance their skills as they consider the world of work.
“These conferences and workshops are part of London City Airport’s wide-ranging educational programme which engages thousands of young East Londoners each year, and it’s a pleasure to be working with the Royal Borough of Greenwich and THEBP to deliver this project.”
Runway to Success is also supported by Sir William Boreman’s Foundation and the Big Potential. Funding from these organisations has made it possible to deliver the programme to even more students.
“Having celebrated our Silver Jubilee in 2016, we are thrilled to be collaborating with London City Airport and the Royal Borough of Greenwich to extend our reach beyond Tower Hamlets to help even more young people to learn more, do more, and become more,” comments Helen Sanson, Director of Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership. “As in Tower Hamlets, students in Greenwich actually attain higher than the national average at GCSE level, but can struggle to convert this academic potential into employment readiness. Giving students the opportunity to learn about the world of work through a variety of programmes is enormously beneficially in raising their aspirations and helping them to imagine their future beyond school. We are grateful to all the supporters of this programme and are thrilled to be working in partnership with London City Airport and the Royal Borough of Greenwich to put local students on the Runway to Success!”
